Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777 - 1855)

Carl Friedrich Gauss was a German mathematician who dominated the mathematical community during and after his lifetime. A child prodigy, at the age of seven, he amazed his teachers when he added the numbers from 1 to 100 instantly by spotting that the sum was 50 pairs of numbers each pair adding to 101.

He is well known for his "Theory of the Motion of Heavenly bodies" .
