The word geometry is derived from the Greek meaning "earth measurement". Geometry is concerned with the properties and relationships of figures in space. Although geometry originated for practical purposes in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, the Greeks, in particular Euclid, investigated it in a more systematic and general way. In the 19th century, mathematicians developed alternative systems of geometry that rejected much of Euclid's work.
